Frequently.Asked.Questions

Q: WHAT IS PENTOBER?

A: A writing challenge every year in October where you use pen and paper to write a short short story (500 words or less).

Q: WHERE DOES PENTOBER HAPPEN?

A: Pentober has many social media locations but there is no brick & mortar location. Feel free to follow Pentober on Twitter, Instagram or sign-up for our 5 E-Mail a Year Newsletter. However, regardless of whether you follow Pentober or now, its location is where you happen to be writing you next great story!

Q: WHEN IS PENTOBER?

A: Pentober is every October. Post your first Pentober on October 1st and your last on October 31st.

Q: HOW DOES PENTOBER WORK?

A: My short answer is you use the day's prompt to handwrite a short story and share it in your social media. For a much longer answer, please read the Rules & Prompts page.

Q: CAN I WRITE MY STORY DIGITALLY?

A: Of course! The challenge is to write one story every day, incorporating using pen and paper is just a way to bring me closer to my story on a more personal level. Using pen and paper also eliminates distractions that we ALL so often fall victim too. But using pen and paper is by no means a hard and fast rule! If you much rather tell your story directly on your computer, tablet, or mobile device (ie iPhone) then by all means do so! As long as you finish your day having written a great story, that is all that matters.

Q: DO I HAVE TO USE THE OFFICIAL PROMPTS LIST?

A: Absolutely not. Just as the question about using pen and paper, the point of the prompts is to use them as a guide and to give you some form of inspiration. Now, if you truly want to challenge yourself, using the prompts is a great way to do it. They can take you outside of your comfort zone and force you to think outside of the box creatively to tell a story you probably never would have done without the prompt. The choice is yours. As long as you end your day having written a story you are proud enough to share with the rest of us!

Q: DO I HAVE TO WRITE THE PROMPTS IN ORDER?

A: Nope. There is a reason I provide all 31 prompt days up front, to give you the freedom to write them in whatever order you desire. All I ask is that you clearly state which Day Of your story is for. Meaning, if it’s October 3rd but you are writing a story using the prompt on Day 25, just be sure to put “Day 25” either at the top of the paper you are writing your story on, in you Tweet or Instagram post, or at the top of your digital document as you are writing. Any way you let us know is fine! Any order you write them in is fine, too! As long as you finish each day with a completed story is all that matters.

Q: WHERE ARE THIS YEARS PROMPTS?

A: I will post the image of all 31 days worth of prompts on September 1st every year. However, if you would like to see the prompts even EARLIER than that, just subscribe to the email list here. Yes, I know, I promise only 5 E-Mails a year when you subscribe. If you’re reading this, you’ll realize I fibbed. Anyone who subscribes will get a Sneak 6th E-Mail starting in 2019 on August 15th that will include the prompts! All I ask is that you keep that Sneak E-Mail just between us and you don’t share it till September 1st. I can trust you to keep a secret right…

Q: DO I HAVE TO USE MY OWN CREATED WORK OR CAN I USE CHARACTERS AND LOCATIONS CREATED BY SOMEONE ELSE?

A: FanFiction and any form of it is totally allowed. Just remember to follow copyright laws, and always respect the original creators wishes.
